COMPARISON OF SIZES
The following list of vessels shows the progressive increase in
dimensions of British tea clippers, together with some American
clippers. At times individual ships were built of exceptional
dimensions. Even the largest of them would appear small today in
comparison with a moderate sized tramp of say 380 ft. The largest
sailing ships of the present century went up to 400 ft in length, while
the grain fleet comprising the last of the windjammers in the 1930S
averaged 300 ft at 2,400 tons.
